Discover the Undiscovered
Hiking in Lund
The nearby Sunshine Coast
Trail has been compared to the world famous West Coast Trail, which runs along
the west side of Vancouver Island, and the Milford Track in New Zealand. The Sunshine Coast Trail is 180 km long and
meanders from Sarah Point, at its north end, to Saltery Bay on Jervis Inlet at
its south end. Ranging from easy to
challenging, it passes by and through some of the most beautiful and varied
wilderness in the world.
Accessible at numerous
points along its journey, hikers can enjoy easy afternoon jaunts or multi-day
hikes. The Trail is well marked on the
Recreation Map sold at the Powell River Visitor Centre and at various local
businesses. There is also an excellent
book entitled “The Sunshine Coast Trail” written by Eagle Walz, one of the
bushwackers who helped establish the Trail.
Along
the trail there are rest stops and a few primitive campsites with
outhouses. The trail is well marked but
whatever the length of your hike, take water and food. And your camera.

Near
Lund, there is a popular tributary of the Sunshine Coast Trail called Hurtado
Point Trail. Accessed exactly one
kilometer south of Larsen Road in Lund, this easy trail leads to bluffs overlooking
Mace Point on Savary Island. The view is
spectacular! It’s a great place to have
a picnic or relax on a rocky ledge for an afternoon.
